The new Marvel Studios’ endeavors are unique in the film world in that they feature separate movie franchises, such as Iron Man, Captain America and Thor, yet all of the movies contribute consecutively towards one overall storyline. The so-called “first wave” of Marvel movies culminated in all of the major characters from previous films landing on a film called The Avengers. There are now plans for a second round of Marvel movies, which include some of the following.

Iron Man 3 (May 2013)

Iron Man 3 opened in early May and isn’t showing signs of slowing down any time soon. It’s already breaking records at the box office, and its drawing nominations even early on. The Iron Man series with Robert Downey Jr. remains one of Marvel’s most successful film franchises. This particular installment is a good example of the running storyline that jumps from movie to movie, since in Iron Man 3, Tony is dealing with fallout from the events of The Avengers movie related to bad dreams. The film explores themes of vengeance and rebirth.

Thor: The Dark World (November 2013)

This one comes out in November of 2013, and it’s a sequel to the popular Thor movie, with actors like Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman. The movie will reportedly involve the dark world known as Svartalfheim, and the denizens there who target Jane Foster.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 2014)

Captain America is a figure that’s been in the American mythology since World War II, and the most recent reboot was quite a hit. This particular movie will likely involve Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America, hunting down a soviet Assassin known as the Winter Soldier, who may be Bucky Barnes. This character fell to his death in the first Captain America movie, but there’s a storyline in the comics that involves him being brought back by the Soviets using bionic limbs and cryonics technology. At this point, it’s pure speculation regarding whether the movie will use the same storyline, but it seems likely.

Guardians of the Galaxy (August 2014)

Guardians of the Galaxy will involve the exploits of a U.S. Pilot who gets caught up in a space conflict that involves some ex-cons with futuristic characteristics. At this early point, not a whole lot is known about what the movie will exactly entail, but there has certainly been a lot of speculation. The movie will be number 10 in the ongoing reboot that started in 2008. The pilot and the ex-cons manage to get their hands on something that’s very important, apparently, and huge factions in the galaxy end up chasing them as a result. Either way, more science fiction movies of high quality are almost always a plus.

Avengers 2 (2015)

Not much is known about this movie at all at this point, except that Joss Whedon is coming back, which is a real bonus. He also directed the first Avengers movie, which was a box office sensation. Robert Downey Jr., Scarlet Johansson, and many other actors from the first movie are reportedly on board as well.

Well, it seems that this year’s San Diego Comic Con turned out be rather momentous. I could not keep up with all the news coming out of it. So in case you missed anything awesome, I’ve put together the list of announcements and things that I’m most excited about.
Alex Ross’ cover for Volume One of The Tower Chronicles was previewed. It serves as just another reminder of why he’s my favorite comic book artist of all time. The comic will be released in November.
Matt Smith, otherwise known as the 11th Doctor from Doctor Who, took over BBCAmerica’s Twitter account over the course of the weekend. He tweeted about how he’s run out of pants and how otters are cool (I like otters now, otters are cool). He also posted a ton of cool photos of himself with show co-stars Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. Matt also tweeted about his favorite villain, Pinky from Pinky and the Brain. The Firefly reunion panel. Apparently, many tears were shed. Fortunately, someone put the entire thing on YouTube:

Peter Jackson showed off 12 minutes from The Hobbit film. Unfortunately, that is not (and probably won’t be) on YouTube. But those who were present seemed rather impressed.
A teaser for Man of Steel was screened, along with this awesome-looking poster.
Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog will be airing on The CW. I’m hoping this is a teaser for some new episodes (I can dream, right?).
Captain Hook will be coming to season 2 of Once Upon A Time. We’ve also been promised that we’ll finally find out who Henry’s father is.
Game of Thrones revealed new actors set to be cast for season 3 of the series.
Inspector Spacetime fandom will be getting more screen time in the new season of Community.
The new armor for Iron Man 3 was revealed.
Neil Gaiman is giving us a Sandman prequel. Yes, Sandman is returning and we now get to find out what his story was! Being that Sandman was the main reason I took up comic book reading in the first place, this makes me extremely happy.
It was announced that Daniel Radcliffe will be starring in the movie adaptation of Joe Hill’s Horns. I wasn’t entirely too excited about the project when I initially heard it was being developed into a screenplay, but this bit of casting news has quelled most of my fears.
The sequel to Captain America will be called Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Yes, for those of you familiar with the comics, this could very well mean that Bucky is still alive.
Joss Whedon will have a major role in the new season for the web series Husbands (which I keep telling you all to watch).
The Fringe Season 5 trailer has been released! And it looks like we’ll get to see what’s happening in the future after last season’s teaser episode there.

Bryan Fuller hinted at possible new Pushing Daisies content that is not a comic or or mini-series. Maybe a web series? I don’t care! I’d be happy with ANYTHING to bring that show back.

Comic Con Round-Up: The year of epic and why Matt Smith is the coolest Robin

The internet is full of wonderful things and sometimes you stumble upon something that just makes your jaw drop and has you going “Wow.” This series of Photoshopped photos had such an effect on me. In these photos, Flickr user agan aharap gives us a glimpse of our history, along with the superheroes who were (and still are) a part of it.

The Awesome Internet: Superheroes throughout history Robin

I must admit that I’m not entirely sold on The Avengers yet. I like the individual Iron Man and Captain America movies, but the idea of putting those two superheroes together plus more (including Scarlet Johanns0n, who still hasn’t convinced me she’s a good Black Widow) makes me rather uninterested.

However, director Joss Whedon recently stated that the film would be seen through the eyes of Captain America. Having loved that particular movie enough to see it several times, I find myself more interested.  Considering the way Captain America ended, it makes complete sense, because the final moment of that movie acts as a segue into The Avengers. Also, Chris Evans was a wonderful Steve Rogers. He took a character that could have been very one-dimensional and breathed real life into him and made you root for the little guy, even when he became big.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Whedon stated:

“I set out with a very simple problem: There is no reason for these people to be in the same movie. So that’s what my movie has to be about. So much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers’ perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird ass world. Everyone else has been living in it.”

I think seeing the movie through Captain America’s perspective could work out well. Otherwise, you’ve got all of these other massive superhero egos fighting for screen time. Steve Rogers is so different from them, though, that I’m optimistic this film might just turn out to be decent.

Looking for more photos from the upcoming Captain America film? Look no further. Thanks to The Chris Evans Blog and the Marvel website, these photos give you a better idea of how the final movie is going to look.

I’m especially interested in the effect of how they turned the wimpy Steve Rogers into the buff Captain America. I was a little worried about how that would be pulled off, but from the previews and photos I’ve seen, it looks pretty darn good.

I also have to admit I was skeptical about Chris Evans playing the role, as I was on Team John Barrowman (but god forbid an openly gay man play a US super hero, huh? Thanks, Hollywood….). However, Evans does look good in the title role. But now I’m curious to see if he has the acting chops to pull it off.

Captain America: New Photos Robin

Yahoo! Movies has premiered a new poster for the upcoming “Captain America” movie. The film, which opens on July 22, stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Hugo Weaving, Sebastian Stan, Toby Jones, Stanley Tucci, Richard Armitage, Natalie Dormer, Dominic Cooper, Neal McDonough and Samuel L. Jackson.

I am so excited about this movie. Captain America is one of the few Marvel characters I am really into and the film’s trailers look really good.

Marvel Comics has not only released the new Captain America website, but there have also been some new images released from the film on SuperHeroHype.com.

Captain America: The First Avenger, which opens on July 22, also stars Hayley Atwell, Richard Armitage, Natalie Dormer, Neal McDonough and Samuel L. Jackson.
