Dreamfall Chapters Developer Takes on Spielberg and Lucas

Ragnar Tornquist defends the ability of video games to tell a good story.

Since I broke the story about George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg insulting video games’ ability to tell a good story, the internet has been ablaze with gamer rage (and rightly so). Now, Ragnar Tornquist, the game developer behind The Longest Journey, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey and the newly-crowdsourced Dreamfall Chapters, has chosen to respond and challenge the famous Hollywood directors on their misinformed notions about games.

Tornquist took to the stage at Rezzed 2013 and mentioned the comments that were made by Lucas and Spielberg. He began by saying, “Games are where storytelling is being experimented on the most. Take Journey, one of the best games I’ve ever played – it tells an amazing story through pictures and sound that you just wouldn’t see in a TV show.”

In response to Lucas’ actual comment that the second a controller gets involved is where gaming turns off the heart and only becomes a sport, Tornquist continued, “It made me so angry because I’m currently playing The Last of Us… I’m not going to spoil anything – but the beginning of the game sets up this great emotional connection… The controller turns on and your heart does not turn off. You feel desperate.”

I could not have said it better myself. Watch the full Rezzed 2013 Developer Session below.

What a bunch of noobs. DON’T FEED THE TROLLS!

Seriously, Stevie and George are about as in tune to the video games industry as the Pope. Reacting to their “opinions” about a topic they know practically nothing about makes no sense whatsoever. They have both failed miserably at every attempt to break into video games. LucasArts especially was known for one disaster after another. Spielberg has failed to even deliver anything with most of his ambitious “projects”. He’s made appearances at 2 different E3s, on behalf of MS/XBOX, and has yet to produce a single game for the system. I fully expect his attempt at the Halo TV series to be a sad re-skin of Falling Skies.

Ok, I know that their comments were stupid, but really? LucasArts is known for some great games. Knights of the Old Republic anyone?

Don’t give credit where it’s not due; LucasArts only published those games. KOTOR was dev’d BioWare, and KOTOR2 was done by Obsidian. Spielberg had NOTHING to do with either games, and Lucas is only consulted for his “approval” concerning continuity.
