Interview: Jade Tailor On ‘The Magicians’ Crazy and Chaotic Season Finale

It’s that time of the year again: that time when many of our favorite shows wrap up their seasons with a finale episode that’s sure to blow our minds. The Magicians has their season finale this week, wrapping up what has been a fantastic second season. On top of that, Syfy recently announced a third season for the show, meaning that the magic of Brakebills and Fillory will continue on into next year.

But what can fans expect this week during the season finale? We talked with actress Jade Tailor, who portrays Kady on the series, to fill us in on her character and what might happen when the finale airs on Syfy on April 19.

We’ve seen Kady and Julia get close this season. In last week’s episode, Julia, who still doesn’t have her shade, asked Kady to act as her moral compass. How would you say Kady felt after Julia asked her that?

I think, mixed feelings, because, you saw through the season how the friendship had developed and how much they really and truly feel about one another. And how Kady was fighting for her the whole time until she tried to eventually tried to kill Clinton and realized that there was no saving her. She still cared about her and understands that underneath there, that it’s not really Julia, the fact that she doesn’t have her shade. I think there was a part of her that was still hopeful that she can help her. There’s a part of her that’s a little bit resentful that she’s fought for her for so long and now she’s asking for her help again. And there’s a part of her that really needs her help. So I think it’s definitely mixed feelings when that happened.

John had Kady do the ritual that killed him. How is that going to affect her going into the season finale?

Intensely. In many, many ways, she is going to fall into some old patterns, sort of a downward spiral. I think all the things are going to affect her, like Julia’s betrayal again, losing that friendship, having to kill John and now, potentially, having Penny dying. There’s a lot at stake here and it’s affecting her. And she’s a fighter, but she also, during these times, she tends to self harm. And also, she goes into survival mode. So there’s definitely some of that in the season finale.

When it comes to Penny, Kady seems hesitant to have a relationship with him. Will we see that resolved before the end of the season?

I mean, is there ever any resolution on the show?

What is it like playing that relationship?

It’s so fun, I love it. It’s so multi-faceted and there are so many layers in their relationship. Because you see that they’re two people that care so deeply, but they’re defense mechanisms overrules them. And that in a relationship is a really interesting thing to play. It’s been really, really fun.

What is your favorite scene that you filmed this season?

There’s a lot. I mentioned a couple of times that one of my favorites was the heist episode because of all the action and the excitement. But there are some really fun moments, like this one scene between Kady and Penny where she’s drunk and she’s basically yelling at him. It was this moment of really seeing how deeply hurt she is and how much she cares at the same time and doesn’t know how to deal with those emotions. And it was just such an intense moment that I really found fun to play.

I also have to say that the stuff with Julia and Kady, I was really proud to be able to talk about the abortion and choice. And we had a lot of people that were really impacted by that and what that means. And we had women tell us they were inspired by us just having an open dialogue about that.

So what can you say about the season finale that’s not spoilery?

Nothing (laughter). No, I’ll tell you a little bit. I’m really thrilled that we are bringing a character potentially back that Kady gets to sort of develop some sort of relationship with. That’s pretty much all I can say. But it takes Kady’s storyline in a whole other direction, so I’m really thrilled about that. You can expect a lot of craziness, a lot of chaos, the usual.

Where would you like to see Kady go in the third season?

I would like her to see Fillory more, maybe talk to some animals. This season, you see so many sides to her that you didn’t see in season one. You see her signing and you see her speaking Hebrew. You see all of these skills that are surprising, like people just don’t know her backstory, where she comes from, how she knows these things. So mostly, I would like to delve a little more into backstory and why she’s so skilled. I would just like to see more of what she’s capable of and expand on that.
