Sharknado Viewings Go High-Tech

Syfy announces transmedia Sharknado and Sharknado 2 in-home lighting experience.

Well, this is different: Syfy is announcing a partnership with Philips that will allow viewings of both Sharknado and Sharknado 2 to have an “immersive lighting experience” while pairing the film viewing with the Syfy Sync second screen app. There’s just one catch: you’ll need to have the Philips Hue connected lighting system to get that experience. Actually, there’s another catch, this is only going to work if you have an iPhone or iPad. Seriously, Android is currently the #1 mobile OS, WHY AREN’T COMPANIES GETTING THAT MESSAGE YET?

Anyway, if you’re lucky to have the lighting system and an “i” device, you just pair the Philips system to the Syfy Sync app while watching Sharknado 2 next week, on July 30th. Your lights will do some kooky things in response to what’s happening in the movie. Even better, though, you can watch the first Sharknado on Netflix, Amazon, etc.  and have the same experience.

The app detects audio cues from the movies and then translates them for the Hue system. It’s kind of clever, but counts on people having the system in the first place (and although I’m sure the Hue system is neat, I doubt people are going to buy one specifically for Sharknado). So if you happen to be one of those people who have the ability to sync all this up, leave a comment below and let us know how it works.

In the meantime, stay tuned to the site here. I’ll be posting an interview soon with Sharknado 2 stars Ian Ziering, Tara Reid and Vivica A. Fox, along with the film’s director Anthony Ferrante.
