Guest Post: Listen to your Master: Thoughts on Doctor Who episode “The End of Time”
Written by: Joe Hadrin, Doctor Who junkie, and other weirdness.
The Doctor is back. Christmas. The Master. Donna and her new bloke. Her grandfather – good old Wilf… and her mom. Gallifrey makes an impressive yet brief appearance, and manages to break your hearts. Again.
It is said that in the final days of planet Earth, everyone had bad dreams. To the west of the north of that world, the human race did gather, in the celebration of a pagan rite to banish the cold and the dark. Each and every one of those people had dreamed of the terrible things to come. But they forgot, because they must. They forgot their nightmares of fire and war and insanity. They forgot. Except for one.
The most important man alive. It’s said he will knock four times, and that he was always this for the Doctor. His ending, and a signal to a new beginning. They need a Doctor to stop the dreams – well he does.. most everybody else ignores and forgets the madman and his laughter. Wilf suffers on, but only for a short time… as he enlists the help of the silver cloak to track down the Doctor. Which they do in record time. What is it about Wilf? Why was it so easy for him to find the Doctor? Perhaps the advances of the Ood had a tentacle in it.
Ohhh.. and good Queen Bess! Well, never mind.
Time is ending for the Doctor, and he can’t run fast enough. He leaves the Ood in a fit of rage and terror. Clearly not ready to die. But who is really?
The Master. Skeletor. He is ready to die. Like always. So so…. very hungry.
New powers. Insane. Killing himself for a good joke. We start to see the depths that Timelords go to. It’s a sad story. One of friendship lost, one of betrayal. Lucy Saxon. Killer of her husband, Harold Saxon, Ex-PM of Great Britain.
Reborn out of death. Given over to death as a young child, thanks to The Doctor.
The tapping. One…two.. three, four. The drums and also the heartbeat of a Timelord.
For Gallifrey! For the End of Time!
The drums. A White Point Star. The Master as the link. Oh, Rassilon, what a naughty boy you’ve been. But you never give up, Lord President. Do you? Cruel and insane, power-hungry and mad. Corrupt to the core. Yet true to yourself.
For friendship. For honor. For a rare moment of clarity and doing what is right. Back to the time lock, Rassilon, back to the Time War.
Yet we see the Master die again, and gain revenge at the same time.. while saving the entire human race.. and their……… Christmas.
Is this the end for The Master and Gallifrey? Who knows. But they will see each other again, and in the past. Believe it or not… The Doctor, Master and Rani were in the same class at the Gallifreyan Academy. Plus one can’f forget about the Valeyard, and Clara. The impossible girl, saving him through his entire timeline.
All that Master had was his wife, but that seemed to be enough for him. Except in the end.. she more or less killed him twice. A bit sad really.
