I’m not sure what the obsession that Hollywood currently has with turning movies into musicals, but I’m not entirely sure why Pan’s Labyrinth has to be one of those. Apparently, Guillermo del Toro has been working on turning his film into a musical adaptation. Why this is necessary, though, is anyone’s guess.
DelToro is currently writing the musical book with Jeremy Ungar and the song lyrics are being written by Paul Williams. This, I find interesting, as Williams has written music for The Muppet Movie, Bugsy Malone and such other very-non Pan’s Labyrinth projects.
Gustavo Santaolalla will be collaborating with Williams on the music. His name might be familiar if you’ve listened to the Brokeback Mountain score.
So far, this is all the information that is out there. And I’m sort of hoping that it doesn’t happen. But this is Del Toro, and who knows? A musical Pan’s Labyrinth might be good.
