In spite of many many many poor digital decisions on SyFy’s part, they do occasionally offer up some good web series programming. From Mercury Men to this week’s pick Riese: Kingdom Falling, these series feature high quality acting, writing and directing.
Of course, SyFy refuses to upload their videos to YouTube (another bad decision, in my opinion), but I’m not going to let that sway me from telling you all to watch it.
Riese: Kingdom Falling is a 2009 steampunk series about a wanderer, Riese, who is fleeing across the war torn lands of Eleysia with her wolf, Fenrir. She is being pursued by assassins from something known as The Sect. Riese must evade the assassins that have been sent to kill her and discover their true objective.
Riese features a ton of great genre actors, as well: Sanctuary‘s Amanda Tapping, Ryan Robbins and Emilie Ullerup; Stargate Universe‘s Patrick Gilmore and Peter Kelamis; Stargate Atlantis‘ Bill Cotton; Battlestar Galactica‘s Alessandro Juliani and Smallville‘s Allison Mack.
If I had to guess, Riese was originally shot as a pilot for Syfy, who decided not to run with an actual television series. So they pulled a Blood & Chrome and released it in short-length online. I haven’t verified this, but it seems to be an ongoing trend with the network.
