The Peabody awards recognizes excellence in television broadcasting and is one of the highest honors a show can receive. This year, HBO’s Game of Thrones joins only a handful of other science fiction and fantasy series that have received the coveted prize.
Game of Thrones joins such groundbreaking series as Battlestar Galactica, Lost, The X-Files and Star Trek: The Next Generation on the list of genre shows that have qualified as excellent, according to the Peabody website:
“Because submissions are accepted from a wide variety of sources and styles, deliberations seek “Excellence On Its Own Terms.” Each entry is evaluated on the achievement of standards it establishes within its own contexts. Entries are self-selected by those making submissions and as a result the quality of competing works is extraordinarily high. The Peabody Awards are then presented only to “the best of the best.”
The ceremony, to be hosted by Captain Picard himself, Sir Patrick Stewart, will occur in New York on May 21st.
