Do you NaNoWriMo?

As I had previously mentioned, I recently finished an extremely rough draft for a novel I’ve been toying around with. It’s a very barebones all-plot and action sort of story right now, though. So a friend talked me into joining National Novel Writing Month and I thought I’d use that to do the re-write.

Yes, I realize that’s not the complete point of NaNoWriMo, but as my novel needs a great deal of re-writing, I’m more or less starting from scratch. And I have been up front with my region in how I’m starting.

The real purpose of NaNoWriMo is to write as much as you can in the course of a month and to set a goal for 50,000 words. I’m setting my personal goal at 60,000. Yes, I’m an over-achiever. But that gives me 10,000 words that I can edit out later (because there will be editing) after the fact. I currently only have 20,000 words of a stream of consciousness piece, so I’m considering that more an outline than anything else.

I think the best part of NaNoWriMo so far is the community. The encouragement I’m receiving is incredible and being able to discuss the process with others doing the same thing has really given me a great impetus to get this re-write done.

Yesterday was the first day and I managed to bang out over 2,100 words. I surprised myself as the most I’d ever done in one sitting previously was about 1,000 words. But having taken a month off from the story has allowed me to fill in a lot of the blanks of my rough outline/draft. I do feel like I’m basically starting over with the novel, and I am typing everything from scratch.

I also started using Yarny, which is an online tool for writing a novel. I like it better than Google Docs (which I used on the rough draft) and I like being able to write snippets and notes right within the sidebars as I go along to keep track of everything.

So anyway, I have to ask: Do any of you NaNoWriMo?

I’m doing pretty good so far. I’ve got my 1667 average per day done for today but I’m going to try to write over that. My region pretty much disappeared this year so I joined in with Atlanta even though I’m about an hour away. NaNoLanta has a chatboard running all the time and I’m mostly using that. The sense of community is awesome. Good Luck 🙂

I’m a little over an hour from my region, but that was the closest one. I’ve really enjoyed the community so far, though!
