I love fall. The weather is cooler, people stop mowing their grass and I stop sneezing (major allergies) and it’s time to dig out the sweaters and boots and scarves and be fashionable. It’s also the time we get a lot of new t.v. shows and with the amount coming in this year, I’m going to have a hard time keeping up with them all.
The CW has a hit on their hands with The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural, so they thought they would through yet another supernatural-based series our way, The Secret Circle. As I watch the first two shows mentioned in that last sentence, I thought I’d give this new one a shot.
And the verdict is in. After one episode, I think I’m going to like it. It’s about a girl, Cassie, whose mother dies in a mysterious house fire and has to move to a town, where she discovers that she comes from a long line of witches. But as something bad happened about 16 years ago, witchcraft had been sworn off by the community. There’s just one problem: teenagers. Because teenagers have minds of their own, the teenagers from the witch families have been practicing in secret, unbeknownst to their parents. When Cassie comes to town, these kids immediately are drawn to her and let her in on the secret. You see, Cassie actually fills the last spot in their own secret coven.
The premise sounds rather shallow, but it seems to have a lot of depth and story to fill in. I am especially interested in what happened in the past that caused the parents to swear off magic. And of course, this is a mystery that is mentioned throughout the first episode. There are also those who aren’t all that they seem and others who may or may not be trusted. There is plenty of intrigue to keep this story developing, at least over the course of a season. Beyond that, who knows? But The CW has had great success with this genre, so I’m sure they’ll try to keep the show going for as long as it takes if it finds a loyal fanbase.
So my opinion is that The Secret Circle seems promising so far. I still have episode 2 to watch, but I think I’m going to like it. Also, the series is based on a series of books by L.J. Smith, who also penned the original books that The Vampire Diaries series is based on.
How about you? Have you seen The Secret Circle yet?
