Another season of Torchwood? It doesn’t look good.

It seems that Starz just isn’t that big of a fan of Torchwood. At the TCA Press tour, representatives from the network revealed that although they are happy with the show’s success, they may not be happy enough to renew it for another season.

The premiere of Torchwood: Miracle Day posted good ratings for Starz, but it seems the show’s future is still not secure. This year’s 10-episode season was a “large and unusual commitment” for the BBC (really?) and a renewal of the series depends on whether or not Russell T. Davies can come up with another idea that he can sell to both companies.

Torchwood is not one of the shows we went into thinking about a yearly return,” said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht. “It’s about Russell T Davies … he has a lot of things on his plate. If Torchwood is at the top of his list, that will effect the future of Torchwood.”

Hmmm…. it sounds like they’re trying to blame their decision on the show itself, but still saying that it’s their decision to make. Which is it then?

Honestly, I am not surprised. I haven’t been entirely happy with Starz handling of the show (including turning their noses up at certain cons that have supported the show, in the past) or how they’ve promoted it. I don’t think Starz knows how to handle something like Torchwood. But then again, maybe neither does the BBC.

I think Torchwood thrived better on BBC, as it had access to more of the core science fiction fan-base. It was also available on sites like iTunes and Amazon Video on Demand with that agreement.
