So here we are. Brand new site. First post. And I don’t quite know how to start this, so I’ll start at the beginning. I was born in…
Okay, nevermind. Maybe I should just tell you a little bit about me instead without that little tidbit of information. Shall we begin?
I think I have always been a fan of something, throughout the course of my life. Starting with The A-Team (oh, wait… am I dating myself already? Oops.) and my fandom covers everything from Duran Duran to Doctor Who to video games, comic books and movies.
My ex-husband used to call me obsessive. And you know what? He was right. However, this obsession is not a bad thing, as he always intimated. Fandom is how I connect myself to the universe and how I connect TO the universe. And as far as I can tell, there is no harm in that.
I have recently returned from the Gallifrey One convention in Los Angeles. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it is the largest North American convention dedicated to Doctor Who (I will get into Doctor Who a lot on this blog – you have been warned). I got to celebrate one of my absolute favorite things, Doctor Who, with 2,199 of my closest friends. And that’s exactly what it felt like. In fact, when I left the con, I felt empty. As if I had lost my best friend. And in a way, I had. For once in my life, I felt a connection with other human beings who didn’t look at me as if I were a monster with three heads (although that is a pretty cool visual) or some poor clueless loser who didn’t think life revolved around the normal day-to-day stuff that we all tend to get caught up in. For once in my life, I felt truly alive. So in the spirit of that, I decided to start this blog.
This will be a blog about being a fan and about other fans. I hope to interview folks within my own fandoms, as well as interview those who are fans themselves. This is where I want to celebrate fandom in every way possible and to invite you all to celebrate it with me. I hope in the process that I can create my own special little place on the net where folks can come to and always find something entertaining to read and share.
And while we’re on that subject, yes, there will be sharing. I can’t write this all on my own (fandom is not a solo thing, after all). So feel free to hit that “Submit” button if you’ve got an idea or story to share. And as always, I’m on Twitter as @sunriserobin.
